U.S. Federal authorities have arrested and charged an individual from Durham who tried to assist ISIS. According to a federal criminal complaint, Alexander Justin White was captured at Raleigh-Durham International Airport while boarding an airplane to Paris, the first portion of a scheduled journey to Morocco. It came after several months of investigation in which he affirmed his backing for ISIS and his goals to join the terrorist group.
As stated by a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District,
“As alleged in the complaint, between May and October of 2024, White used an online account under the name ‘Sulaiman Al-Amriki’ to make numerous posts supporting ISIS and the concept of violent jihad.”
The office further said,
“This allegedly included videos commonly used to recruit new members and to generate a passion for fighting as well as fundraising videos and several posts and reposts in reference to well-known ISIS supporters and scholars.”
The detention wasn’t shared until this week while authorities investigated if he had schemers. Still, they stated that White operated independently, U.S. Attorney Michael Easley Jr. expressed at a news conference in Raleigh.
Moreover, White’s online exchanges authenticated an “active effort” to join ISIS overseas, federal authorities stated, and that he was “pledged in financial transactions to refugee camps which are well understood for acting as a front to channel money to ISIS members and their supporters.”
“We work closely with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force to shut down suspected terrorist activities in the United States, including American citizens willing to commit violence against our troops,”
stated U.S. Attorney Michael F. Easley, Jr.
“We couldn’t do our work without strong local partners, willing to share their resources to protect our homeland.”
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces play very crucial roles in the United States’ counterterrorism, involved in investigating and preventing terrorist activities through collaboration between several law enforcement agencies. Their significance has been epitomized by cases such as the Fort Dix attack plot, the 2009 New York City subway bombing plot by Najibullah Zazi, and the January 6 Capitol attack. These investigations demonstrate their proactive approach to identifying and neutralizing potential threats.
