Qatar Hosts Global Dialogue on Women’s Role in Counter-Terrorism Efforts

International parliamentarians urged the importance of functioning to ensure women’s participation in combating terrorism and stopping violent extremism and determining the challenges and solutions required to improve their parliamentary representation in security and defence committees, in addition to sustaining capacity building that women parliamentarians need in approaches to combat terrorism and extremism and its legislation.

They expressed in statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), on the sidelines of the second day of the Sixth Global Conference for Women Parliamentarians held in Doha, that the meeting discussed improving the participation of women parliamentarians in developing and implementing procedures and legislation, the importance of exchanging adventures and good practices between female parliamentarians from different countries of the world, and the condition of promoting awareness and instruction about the importance of women’s position in combating terrorism and preventing extremism.

HE Secretary-General of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Dr Mohammad Reza Majidi, voiced his deep appreciation to the State of Qatar for hosting the UN Counter-Terrorism Office in Doha, and for managing this conference that discusses the position of women parliamentarians, expecting that this regional and international conference will contribute to Expand the role of women parliamentarians, and make them more useful.

HE Dr Mohammad stated in press statements to QNA that the conference dialogues over two days confirmed that the position of parliamentary women will be more engaged through their participation in such significant international conferences, as these conferences donate to supporting women parliamentarians and making their capabilities, as well as enlightening people about the functions of parliamentarians and their importance.

He indicated that parliamentary diplomacy, as complementary diplomacy, has a more dynamic role in international connections at present, and in collaboration with the UN, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and regional institutions, especially parliamentary ones, would deliver a kind of synergy for all communities in many ways, the most significant of which is combating Terrorism and containing extremism, pointing in this respect to the difficult conditions the Gaza Strip is currently seeing.

For her part, Vice-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nadia Thami emphasised the importance of the topics and problems raised by the Sixth Global Conference for Women Parliamentarians, noting the demand to focus efforts on combating terrorism and preventing extremism through legal and security procedures, in addition to adopting proactive approaches to confront these dangers.

She stated in press statements to QNA that the conference concerned, over two days, the profound function played by women parliamentarians in fighting terrorism and preventing violent extremism in cooperation with civil society institutions, examining in this regard her country’s experience in encountering terrorism and the efforts it is making to eradicate it.
