Immediate Action Needed to Address Escalating Violence in Northern Togo

The Tactics Institute for Security and Counterterrorism urgently calls for immediate intervention to halt the escalating violence perpetrated by extremist organizations in northern Togo. We demand that all concerned parties take decisive action to prevent further destabilization of this already volatile region.

Recent events have highlighted a disturbing trend of violent extremist organizations from northern Benin and Burkina Faso increasingly targeting northern Togo. This alarming spillover of conflicts from the Sahel into coastal countries poses a significant threat to regional peace and stability.

On June 18, four civilians tragically lost their lives in Bonzougou after riding over an improvised explosive device (IED). This attack, occurring farther south into Togo than previous incidents, underscores the growing reach of these extremist groups. Just five days later, hooded terrorists brutally ambushed the town of Bamone, killing four individuals in a gruesome display of violence. These incidents are part of a series of attacks on both military and civilians in northern Togo in late June, as reported by local media and social media users.

The Togolese Armed Forces have not been spared, with a counterinsurgency operation in Koundjoaré resulting in the destruction of a helicopter and injuries to several soldiers. The Togolese government has been notably silent on these operations, adding to the uncertainty and fear among the population.

Since 2021, when terrorists attacked Sanloaga near the borders with Benin and Burkina Faso, violence has gradually seeped into Togo. President Faure Gnassingbé has acknowledged the heavy toll on the nation’s defence and security forces, with around 40 military personnel and over 100 civilian victims reported.

The Tactics Institute stresses that the actions of these violent extremist organizations flagrantly violate international fundamental rights and laws. The international community must hold these groups accountable and provide support to the Togolese government in its efforts to combat terrorism and protect its citizens.

We demand that the belligerents cease all violent activities immediately. The Togolese authorities must enhance their communication and transparency regarding counterterrorism operations to rebuild public trust and ensure the safety of their citizens. Furthermore, international partners should increase their assistance to Togo, focusing on deradicalization programs and community resilience initiatives.

The Tactics Institute urgently calls for an immediate cessation of all violent extremist activities in northern Togo. We must work together to restore peace and security in this troubled region.
