Immediate Action Needed to Halt Escalating Violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Tactics Institute urgently demands an immediate cessation of hostilities between the M23 armed group and pro-government forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The situation, exacerbated by renewed fighting, poses a severe threat to regional security and peace.

Renewed clashes between the M23 armed group and pro-government forces in eastern DRC have resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis, with thousands fleeing to Goma, the largest city in the region. Tensions between Hutu- and Tutsi-led rebel groups persist, fueling violence and displacement.

Over a span of four weeks in February and March, ethnic violence forced approximately 250,000 civilians to seek refuge in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. The conflict has disrupted humanitarian efforts, leading to soaring food prices and hindering aid delivery.

The M23’s encroachment upon Goma has severely restricted access to essential services and humanitarian aid, exacerbating the plight of displaced persons. With formal camps already at capacity, makeshift settlements and inadequate living conditions have become the norm for those uprooted by the conflict.

This situation not only poses a grave threat to the immediate region but also has the potential to destabilize the entire surrounding area, which is already grappling with volatile situations. The escalation of violence in eastern DRC could spill over into neighbouring countries, exacerbating existing tensions and conflicts. Regional stability is at risk, and urgent action is needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation and to safeguard peace in the broader region.

The Tactics Institute vehemently condemns the actions of the M23 armed group and calls for their immediate withdrawal from Goma and cessation of hostilities. The continued violence not only violates international laws but also exacerbates an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Furthermore, the international community must step up efforts to provide adequate funding and support for relief efforts in the DRC. Low funding levels are hindering relief efforts, exacerbating the suffering of millions of displaced Congolese facing severe hunger and insecurity.

The Tactics Institute urges all concerned parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and the restoration of peace in eastern DRC. Immediate action is imperative to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict and to prevent further escalation of violence.
