Tactics Institute Calls for Immediate Action to Prevent Escalation of Regional Insecurity

In light of recent developments concerning the former Boko Haram militants in Nigeria, the Tactics Institute urgently calls upon all concerned parties to address the grievances of these individuals to prevent a potential resurgence of violence and instability in the region.

Nigeria is seeking to reintegrate former Boko Haram terrorists who have willingly laid down their arms and relinquished to the authorities. In 2016, the Nigerian government established the Operation Safe Corridor to encourage the rehabilitation of ex-insurgents. According to official data, coordinated military drives have to date resulted in the surrender of more than 35,000 Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists and their families. The authorities contend that the reintegration of deradicalized soldiers will guarantee sustainable peace and security in the nation and help bring the decade-long insurgency to an end.

However, the current situation unfolding in Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, where former Boko Haram fighters reside in camps, poses a significant threat to regional peace and stability. Despite assurances from the authorities, these individuals, numbering over 100,000, have voiced frustration over the neglect of their basic needs and the failure to fulfil promises of reintegration into society.

Former militants have expressed their discontent, stating that they are considering a return to violence if their demands are not met. This alarming prospect not only jeopardizes the fragile peace efforts but also risks exacerbating the already volatile security situation in the region.

Tactics Institute vehemently condemns any actions that violate international fundamental rights and exacerbate regional insecurity. The neglect of these individuals’ needs and the failure to fulfil promises of rehabilitation and reintegration constitute a clear violation of their rights and international obligations.

It is imperative that the authorities take immediate and concrete steps to address the grievances of the former Boko Haram fighters. This includes providing adequate support for their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, as promised. Neglecting these demands not only undermines the credibility of the authorities but also fuels resentment and increases the likelihood of further violence.

Tactics Institute calls upon the Nigerian government and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the resolution of this issue and to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals affected. Failure to act swiftly and decisively risks plunging the region into further chaos and instability.

InTactics Institute urges the belligerent parties to cease their actions immediately and to engage in constructive dialogue to address the underlying issues. The future peace and stability of the region depend on it.
