The Tactics Institute issues an urgent call to the governments of Israel and Egypt to resolve the escalating conflict over the Rafah border crossing. The Institute demands that Israel relinquish its control over the Gaza side of the crossing and that both nations facilitate the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian crisis.
The conflict between Israel and Egypt over the Rafah border crossing has intensified, with significant implications for regional stability. Following Israel’s takeover of the Gaza side of the crossing on 7 May, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened considerably. This action has obstructed the transit of critical aid, exacerbating the existing crisis and pushing the region towards potential famine.
Egypt’s response, including the suspension of aid transit and its intent to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, underscores the severity of the diplomatic rift. This situation threatens the delicate peace established by the 1979 treaty and has brought relations between Israel and its largest Arab neighbour to their lowest point in decades.
The Tactics Institute stresses that Israel’s actions at the Rafah crossing constitute a breach of the Philadelphi Accord, a key component of the 2005 Israel-Egypt peace agreement regulating the Gaza-Egypt border. This violation not only endangers the peace treaty but also undermines international humanitarian law and the fundamental rights of those living in Gaza. The continued closure of Rafah and the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing has effectively isolated Gaza from essential aid, violating the international community’s obligation to protect civilians in conflict zones.
The Tactics Institute demands that Israel immediately cease its blockade of the Rafah crossing and comply with international agreements to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Furthermore, Egypt should maintain its role as a mediator and ensure that the crossing remains open for aid transit, thereby preventing further humanitarian suffering. The international community must also pressure Israel to adhere to its legal and humanitarian obligations to avert a deeper crisis in Gaza.
The Tactics Institute urgently calls on Israel to restore access to the Rafah border crossing and allow the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, upholding international law and ensuring the fundamental rights of the people in Gaza are protected. Immediate action is crucial to prevent further escalation and restore peace and stability in the region.
