The Tactics Institute for Security and Counterterrorism strongly condemns the recent heinous attack in the town of Barsalogho, Burkina Faso. The attack was carried out by the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The incident claimed the lives of around 200 people and left 140 injured. It highlights the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to combat JNIM’s growing influence.
JNIM fighters plunged upon Barsalogho, a strategic town near Kaya. It killed women, children, and young men who were engaged in efforts to defend their community by digging protective trenches. JNIM’s operations have not only intensified in Burkina Faso but have also spread to neighbouring countries. It includes Mali, Niger, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Benin, and Togo. The group’s goal is to establish an Islamic caliphate across the Sahel. It also wants to expel Western-influenced governments. It poses a significant threat to regional stability and global security.
The Tactics Institute demands swift and decisive action from the international community to address the growing threat posed by JNIM. The global community must provide immediate military assistance to Burkina Faso and its neighbours to counter JNIM’s advances. This includes intelligence-sharing, logistical support, and capacity-building initiatives to empower local forces.
An attentive strategy to dismantle JNIM’s command structure is essential. International forces, in collaboration with regional governments, should prioritize the capture or elimination of JNIM’s leadership. It must also include its notorious leader, Iyad Ag Ghaly.
The Tactics Institute for Security and Counterterrorism stands with the people of Burkina Faso in the wake of this tragic attack. We call on the international community to unite against the growing threat of JNIM. It’s time to take decisive action to prevent further loss of life and destabilization in the region.
