Tactics Institute Demands Immediate Halt to Alleged Foreign Military Base Plans in Nigeria

Tactics Institute expresses significant concerns regarding the current grave developments in the Sahel region, highlighting their potential danger. Recently, five civil society groups and a former chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission issued a stark warning to Nigeria’s president and the National Assembly. In an open letter, the coalition raises grave concerns regarding the alleged plans for the establishment of foreign military bases in Nigeria.

The coalition, in its letter, accuses the United States and France of lobbying authorities in the Gulf of Guinea countries, particularly Nigeria, to redeploy troops expelled from the Sahel states. This purported move, if implemented, could have devastating implications for regional defence and internal security.

Kabiru Adamu, founder of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, highlighted the political undertones of the letter, emphasizing the lack of factual evidence supporting the allegations against the U.S. and France. He cautioned against the potential diversion of state funds and resources from vital local projects to host a military base.

The coalition also warns of heightened regional tensions, environmental degradation, and an exacerbation of the high cost of living for the local population. Ahmed Buhari, a political affairs analyst, emphasized the need for Nigeria to prioritize peaceful coexistence with its neighbours over forging alliances with foreign powers.

Despite counterterrorism efforts, the Sahel region has witnessed a staggering 2,000% increase in terrorism-related deaths over the last 15 years. With Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, and Niger ranking among the most impacted countries, the proposed establishment of foreign military bases could further destabilize the region.

Tactics Institute calls upon Nigerian authorities to heed the cautionary voices and reject any plans for foreign military bases within its borders. The organization urges immediate dialogue and collaboration among African leaders to address terrorism and security challenges, emphasizing the need for homegrown solutions to regional issues.

Tactics Institute underscores the importance of preserving regional peace and stability, reiterating the call for an immediate halt to any actions that threaten the security and sovereignty of Nigeria and its neighbours.
