Tactics Institute demands with immediate effect an end to the ongoing atrocities committed by the RED-Tabara armed group in Burundi. The resurgence of attacks by the RED-Tabara armed group in Burundi since late 2023 is deeply troubling. Despite claiming to fight for the rule of law, the group’s actions have strayed from their purported goals. This is evidenced by their targeting of civilians. This shift towards indiscriminate violence not only undermines the stability of Burundi but also threatens to destabilize the entire Great Lakes region.
The porous border shared between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has facilitated the movement of armed groups like RED-Tabara, exacerbating an already volatile situation. The region’s complex conflict dynamics, fueled by political and economic interests, have further complicated efforts to resolve the crisis. RED-Tabara’s recent attacks not only violate international law but also pose a significant threat to regional security and peace.
In light of these developments, Tactics Institute calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities by the RED-Tabara armed group. We urge all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and to refrain from engaging in any further acts of violence. RED-Tabara must recognize the futility of its violent tactics and instead engage in constructive dialogue to address its grievances.
Regional cooperation is essential in addressing the root causes of the conflict and preventing further escalation. Neighboring countries must refrain from providing support or sanctuary to armed groups operating in Burundi, and instead, work towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis. It is imperative that all stakeholders uphold their commitments to international law and humanitarian principles in order to restore peace and stability to the region.
Tactics Institute urges the RED-Tabara armed group to halt its violent activities without delay and calls upon regional actors to come together in solidarity to address the underlying causes of the conflict in Burundi.
