The Tactics Institute for Security and Counterterrorism urgently calls upon the international community to take immediate action against Russia’s exploitation of Libya and the broader Sahel region. The Kremlin-backed Africa Corps, formerly known as the Wagner Group threaten to destabilize an already volatile region. It can be resulted in endangering peace and security.
The situation in Libya is already aggravated by internal political divisions. It has come to light that Russia seeks to manipulate and expand its influence on the African continent. According to a recent report by the Royal United Services Institute, Russia’s tactics involve supporting factions such as Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army. It comprises the goal of controlling Tripoli and undermining Libya’s internationally recognized Government of National Accord. Russia’s activities aim to secure access to Libya’s rich oil resources. It would use the country for Geostrategic goals for broader regional ambitions.
In mid-April, Africa Corps fighters, along with 6,000 tons of military equipment, arrived in Libya. This fact further solidified Russia’s military presence. Plans to build a naval base in Tobruk could allow Russia to influence Mediterranean traffic, expand smuggling operations, and potentially disrupt international shipping routes.
Russia’s actions in Libya and the Sahel region violate international fundamental rights and laws. The Kremlin’s approach includes polarizing populations, mobilizing factions to support allied elites, and undermining opposition elements. These tactics not only destabilize nations but also undermine democratic processes and human rights.
The Tactics Institute demands an immediate cessation of Russia’s military and economic interventions in Libya and the Sahel region. The international community must hold Russia accountable for its actions, which contravene international norms and pose a severe threat to regional stability and global security.
Furthermore, we call for the imposition of strict sanctions on entities involved in these operations, including the Africa Corps and its associated companies. There must be concerted efforts to support democratic institutions and protect the sovereignty and resources of the affected nations. The Tactics Institute insists on immediate international intervention to halt Russia’s exploitative activities in Libya and the Sahel region.
