After completing what could be called one of the most difficult deployments of a modern American aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln is now in Thailand; however, it was not the operational performance of the ship which grabbed the world’s attention but its state. Photos have shown significant rust stains, damaged paint and some marine growth on different parts of the 1,100-foot-long nuclear Nimitz-class carrier.
The pictures instantly raised discussions about the reason why such a worn-out appearance can reveal serious underlying problems within the U.S. Navy’s carrier force. However, there is more to the story than it seems from the photos. Rusting of a ship which has been sailing in the open seas all through the month is not necessarily a sign of any damage done to it, dangerous navigation and poor combat capabilities of the ship. On the other hand, it can be a clear indicator of the price that should be paid for the long-term deployment of the ship without proper maintenance.
A historic deployment reaches Thailand
The Abraham Lincoln arrived at Laem Chabang, Thailand, on September 2, 2026, as part of a scheduled port visit involving elements of Carrier Strike Group 3. The visit was the carrier’s first full port stop since the beginning of its deployment in November 2025, according to the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
According to the Navy, the carrier had completed 286 days on patrol. In addition to that, almost seven months had been spent by the carrier in the U.S. Central Command’s theater of operation in which the strike group and other American military capabilities supported the Operation Epic Fury with conducting combat operations and enforcing a naval blockade, as declared by the Navy, as one of the biggest naval blockades in decades. This deployment made the carrier the key element of U.S. military operation in response to the war with Iran. This mission implied operating far away from the carrier’s home port, hence leaving no room for normal maintenance of the kind usually provided to vessels during a routine port call.
The carrier deployed with about 5,000 sailors and Marines on board. The strike group also comprised the Carrier Air Wing 9, Carrier Strike Group 3 staff, Destroyer Squadron 21 and nine squadrons of aviation units. The guided-missile destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. arrived to Sriracha, while the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls arrived to Map Ta Phut. The stay in Thailand was considered a period of rest, recreation and logistic activity without additional combat mission.
Rear Admiral Robert E. Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, presented the arrival as both a welfare measure and a diplomatic signal.
“Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge,”
Loughran said. He added that the visit demonstrated the
“strong and enduring partnership and alliance between the United States and Thailand.”
Captain Dan Keeler, the carrier’s commanding officer, called the stop the first port visit of the group’s historic deployment and said it would strengthen understanding between the two countries.
“This port visit will help us gain a deeper understanding of one another, demonstrate our mutual commitment to the security of the region, and allow our crew to enjoy this beautiful and historic country,”
Keeler said.
Why the hull looks so deteriorated
The most noticeable thing about the arrival of the aircraft carrier was the amount of rust that could clearly be seen in its hull. Any vessel operating in seawater is always subject to the danger of corrosion. Sea water, moisture, spray and continuous contact with the waves cause gradual wear and tear of paintwork and protective coating, especially along the waterline and front part of the ship.
The hull of a carrier is not painted like the cars and buildings. Restoration work along the waterline will usually need some specialized equipment and procedures. The workers might have to be lowered near the water and do all the restoration work like getting rid of the rust, preparing the steel and putting various layers of protective coating. According to former U.S. Navy Captain Carl Schuster, who served in the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, rust along the waterline was common in any ship which operated continuously for more than 60 days in the water. He estimated that restoring the rust that could be seen on the Lincoln would take 30 days of restoration work.
“Rust is like a contagious disease. It spreads,”
Schuster said, warning that corrosion should be addressed before it becomes a wider structural problem. He also noted that corrosion can weaken steel structures, including decks, walkways and lifelines.
His assessment does not mean the Abraham Lincoln is unsafe. Rather, it highlights the difference between visible surface deterioration and hidden mechanical or structural damage. A rust-streaked hull can be repaired, but continued neglect may allow corrosion to move beyond paint and into the steel itself. The central issue is that such preservation work cannot easily be conducted during high-tempo combat operations. A carrier cannot simply stop offshore, lower teams over the side and carry out extensive hull repairs while simultaneously maintaining flight operations, defensive readiness and continuous movement.
Combat performance versus crew welfare
However, the issue surrounding Lincoln’s crew became even more pronounced given the length of its stay out at sea along with media reports of the deteriorating state onboard the ship. Reports mentioned issues with mental well-being, lack of food and hygiene supplies, mold in shower rooms, water interruptions, and other issues related to an extended stay out at sea. There were reports of sailors and their families describing severe exhaustion and anxiety. The fact that the ship was absent from the port for a long time made it impossible for servicemen to reach out to their loved ones or get help needed for regular medical, personal and recreational purposes. The Navy denied allegations of abandoning the ship and its crew, stating that the mission had become too difficult to accomplish. In response to these allegations, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao stated that the mission of the aircraft carrier had been extended due to operational needs.
“The USS Abraham Lincoln crushed their deployment and will return home soon as part of a planned rotation,”
Cao said.
“The safety and security of our Sailors and Marines always comes first.”
Cao provided figures intended to demonstrate the scale of the carrier’s contribution. He said the Lincoln had spent 266 days deployed, including 200 days in a combat zone, conducted more than 10,000 sorties and dropped 1.5 million pounds of ordnance. He also said retention rates aboard the carrier were among the highest in the fleet.
The Navy official acknowledged that the deployment had placed extraordinary pressure on personnel but disputed portrayals of the crew as victims.
“Deployments are hard. Combat operations make them harder,”
Cao said.
“War is hell and normal routines are disrupted.”
He added that the force had adapted to uncertainty while continuing to perform its mission.
Cao also addressed the specific criticisms surrounding the crew. He said a small number of mental-health cases had been treated with no loss of life, meal plans had been adjusted when fresh resupply was unavailable and no meal had been missed. He said calls home were limited only when the operational threat was considered too high.
“There is no question our young men and women have been pushed to their limits—but they have never broken,”
Cao said.
“They are rightly tired—but have never been out of the fight.”
Those statements represent the official Navy position, but they do not eliminate the need for independent scrutiny. High retention rates and completed missions are important indicators, yet they do not fully measure exhaustion, morale, psychological stress or the long-term effects of extended deployments on sailors and their families.
The numbers behind the mission
The deployment figures illustrate why the carrier became a symbol of both operational endurance and institutional strain.
The Thailand deployment announced by the Navy saw 286 days at sea, while the deployment itself is said to have commenced in November 2025. According to Cao’s statement, the strike group spent almost seven months operating within the United States Central Command area. However, the earlier statement made by Cao mentions 266 days deployed, 200 days in the combat zone, more than 10,000 sorties, and 1.5 million pounds of ordnance dropped. This does not seem to be a contradiction, but a difference in accounting, reporting date, or definition of the terms “deployed” and “at sea”.
Nevertheless, the fact of dropping 1.5 million pounds of ordnance alone is remarkable. In aircraft-carrier sorties, there are combat missions, patrols, reconnaissance, training, and support operations. Whatever the exact composition, this shows the pace at which the air wing of the carrier was operating. It also shows that the deployment in question was not just a show of force. The ship and its aircraft were actively involved in combat, which implied constant upkeep of the aircraft, weaponry, fuel system, radar, communication, and defensive equipment.
The carrier’s external appearance therefore reflects only one part of the story. Behind the rust were thousands of personnel maintaining aircraft, launching and recovering them, operating propulsion and electrical systems, managing weapons and preserving the ship’s ability to respond to threats.
Thailand’s strategic and diplomatic role
Thailand’s role in the port call is also important. The United States and Thailand have maintained military relations for nearly two centuries, beginning with the 1833 Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The U.S. Navy describes Thailand as its only treaty ally on mainland Southeast Asia. The port visit allowed Washington to demonstrate continued access and partnership in the Indo-Pacific while the carrier transitioned from Middle Eastern operations toward its eventual return to the United States.
Loughran said the deployment had produced an historic achievement and praised the professionalism of the strike group.
“What this strike group has accomplished is truly historic,”
he said.
“I could not be prouder of the exceptional professionalism and expertise demonstrated by every member of this team during our operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.”
For Thailand, the visit also brought economic and security considerations. Around 5,000 sailors and Marines were expected to spend time in Pattaya and surrounding areas. Local officials estimated that the visitors could generate between $2.5 million and $3.75 million during the five-day stop if each person spent approximately $100 to $150 per day. Thai authorities increased police patrols and imposed restrictions on some activities, including certain water sports and visits to selected entertainment areas after sunset. The measures reflected concerns about public order during a large influx of foreign military personnel. Bangkok emphasised that the visit was unrelated to renewed military operations in the Middle East. Thai officials described it as a routine port call for rest, recuperation and logistics within existing alliance commitments.
What the rust really reveals
It is important to note that the issue is not simply one of paint but of the sustainability of America’s maritime dominance. America relies on a limited number of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers to project its military force globally. Whenever one carrier spends almost an entire year at sea, there are repercussions beyond just the ship. Such extended operations result in delayed scheduled preservation and maintenance and increase pressures on replacement crew and other ships expected to take up the slack. Extended operations can even create a situation where one ship extends because the other is not available, thus creating even more strain on the fleet. An aircraft carrier can sail with surface corrosion and remain functional, but such a situation serves as a warning sign. Postponed maintenance during emergencies needs to be done at some point. Increased backlog leads to higher costs and can even mean increased time in port or shipyard repair yard. This means that the arrival of the Lincoln represents two truths at once.
First, the carrier managed to complete a challenging military task and showed how long the U.S. strike group can stay in the sea waters. Second, the presence of the rust, hardships reported by the crew members and their complaints about the welfare show the consequences of viewing endurance as a resource that can be used infinitely. In the official statements made by the Navy, emphasis is placed on the mission completion, resilience, and commitment to alliances. On the other hand, the critics of the situation emphasize human and financial costs of sustaining combat power without proper recovery time.
Both perspectives are important in comprehending this story. The most reasonable position on the matter is the fact that it would be inappropriate to say that the USS Abraham Lincoln is an unsuccessful and even unsafe vessel. It would also be wrong to call the photographs irrelevant to the matter. Indeed, the rust is just a maintenance cost resulting from long use, while the whole controversy shows problems with deployment, welfare of the sailors and resilience of the U.S. Navy carrier system. Before returning to San Diego, the ship should go through the checkup and other procedures.
