BAE’s All-British Fighter Jet Turns to American Engine 

The new Brontanax combat drone was supposed to embody a distinctly British aerospace story: designed in the UK, built with British industrial know-how, and presented as a sovereign answer to the RAF’s future combat-aircraft needs. Instead, the headline development is that the “all-British” platform will fly with an American engine, after a reported clash between BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce over cost and pricing.

This turns the programme into more than just another procurement project, one that has turned into an example of how the desire for sovereignty is challenged by the need for affordability and feasibility. Although BAE has tried to describe the jet engine as an interchangeable part, the fact remains that the decision does not help the political advantage of having an indigenous combat plane.

Why the engine matters

The Brontanax concept is not being discussed in relation to its ceremonial nature. It is being marketed as the United Kingdom’s first collaborative combat aircraft, with ambitions toward developing a wingman-type autonomous aircraft for future air combat. The programme has been associated with a target first flight in 2027, as well as future operational capabilities through the decade, and BAE has been quoted as saying its aim is to produce an aircraft at around 25 percent of the cost of a conventional crewed combat aircraft. This is the basis of the controversy. Performance and procurement balance is the very life and death of defence programmes, and in this case it seems that BAE believes that the Rolls-Royce Orpheus engine demonstrator does not fit the bill in terms of its financial and schedule considerations. The end result is the choice of a U.S. engine from Williams International, according to reports the cheaper option.

The clash explained

The crux of the matter is not about patriotism but economics. As reported, Rolls-Royce seemed to be the obvious choice due to its extensive involvement in the production of engines for British fighter jets; however, it was not selected due to differences over the price. One briefed source stated that the engine seemed to be overpriced; BAE’s own position seems to indicate that it sought an engine that would make the demonstrator fly fast.

Rolls-Royce’s chief executive, Tufan Erginbilgic, pushed back firmly on any suggestion that the company lacked the capability. “Absolutely,” Erginbilgic said when asked if Rolls could supply engines for drones such as Brontanax.

“You should ask BAE that.”

He also said he expects the two companies to work together and described the relationship as “very close.”

BAE, by contrast, has tried to avoid making the matter sound like a rupture. The company has reportedly described the engine as a “swap item” and indicated that Rolls could still be involved later if the Orpheus line reaches the required thrust and price point. That language matters because it suggests the U.S. engine is not necessarily being treated as a final ideological choice, but as the most workable immediate solution.

What Brontanax is

The Brontanax platform has been developed by the British company BAE Systems FalconWorks, and presented as the response of the UK to the developing global trend toward the development of unmanned and collaboratively acting combat aircraft. As stated in the reports, the platform engages the participation of more than 70 companies from the country, which adds weight to its home-industrial base, notwithstanding the fact that the engine of the aircraft is foreign-developed for the moment.

The aircraft is seen as a 5-metric-ton-class demonstrator which is supposed to carry out its missions by means of weapons, sensors, and electronic-warfare cargo, operating together with manned aircraft but not replacing them. This type of mission is precisely what the future air-power doctrine that the RAF and other air forces are trying to build now implies: an affordable and fast-produced aircraft capable of extending the air power missions without putting pilots in danger. The strategic significance of this platform is what explains the political nature of the issue of the engine for the aircraft in question.

Britain’s sovereignty dilemma

In Brontanax, however, there is a bigger problem with the UK’s defence policy: how much can it claim sovereignty when a flagship system depends on a foreign-built propulsion system? In one sense, the answer is simple. The aircraft itself is designed, developed, and supported by UK industry. In another sense, the engine is the most symbolic piece of hardware in any fighter aircraft and the fact that the US provides it undermines the all-British claim. The situation with Brontanax is not an exception but part of a broader trend in the defence sector. Nowadays, defence industries rely on international supply chains and even high-tech weapon systems are constructed out of multinational parts and components. However, the UK’s political discourse usually emphasizes sovereignty, especially in the sensitive area of military affairs.

The issue is also commercial. Rolls-Royce remains one of Britain’s most important defence-engine suppliers, and a failure to secure the Brontanax role raises questions about price competitiveness in a market where governments want rapid results and are unwilling to pay a premium just to preserve domestic industrial symbolism. BAE’s decision suggests that, at least for now, cost and schedule outweighed industrial preference.

Rolls-Royce and the bigger picture

Rolls Royce isn’t just a spectator in this matter, it is an integral part of the overall controversy regarding the future of Britain’s aerospace industry. Rolls Royce has been developing Orpheus, a range of engines designed to be affordable as well as a demonstration family of engines meant to support future generations of uncrewed systems. There have been claims that BAE still requires Rolls Royce in the development of its future models, which means the current exclusion may only be temporary. This factor matters since it mitigates the severity of criticism. In case of the transition from using the Williams International engines for the first flight/demonstration to the Orpheus based British engines in future models, the current choice will appear to be a transitional measure. Still, in any case, it damages the image of an entirely indigenous platform.

For Rolls-Royce, the issue is reputational as much as commercial. The company’s presence in fighter-engine programmes has long been part of Britain’s defence identity, and losing ground on a headline project risks reinforcing the impression that cost-sensitive new platforms are now slipping beyond the reach of traditional British suppliers.

Political and industrial fallout

The timing adds gravity to the tale. Britain has been keen to fast-track its procurement efforts and strengthen its industrial readiness, but the government has also tried to send the message that the UK can work faster in the context of increased security challenges. Under such conditions, Brontanax is not just an aircraft but the case of whether the country can upgrade its defense production capabilities without falling into the trap of legacy cost structures. That is what makes the term “all-British” especially important. It is both a technical and political label creating the expectation that the program will fail to live up to some of those expectations. An aircraft made by Rolls-Royce with an engine produced in America may still be called a British military asset, but it will never be the immaculate sovereign product suggested by the branding. 

There is also a lesson for the country’s industrial policy. If Rolls-Royce fails to comply with BAE’s cost requirements in the development of a prototype based on inexpensive autonomy, then Britain’s defense industry will have to face the challenge of competitiveness of its supply chains.

What to watch next

What remains unclear is whether this is a temporary measure or the starting point for the program. According to reports, BAE has made clear that the engine can be changed in the future, while Rolls-Royce appears keen to rejoin the program if the Orpheus family of engines can meet the requisite standards of performance and cost-efficiency. Even if the Brontanax flies as scheduled in 2027 with a US-made engine, the program will still represent an important milestone for British defence technology. However, the controversy that surrounds it will not abate since the plane itself represents the clash between two realities – that Britain can develop state-of-the-art military systems and that it cannot do so without importing major components under pressure of costs.
