Recently, the UN representative for Iran has supported the nation’s recent counterterrorism efforts, which have targeted the headquarters of Takfiri terrorists in Syria and anti-Iranian terror groups in Iraq.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, made the comments in a letter addressed to the world body’s Security Council. According to the ambassador, the actions were undertaken in accordance with the Islamic Republic’s “inherent right of self-defence under international law and the United Nations Charter.”
He said, “Upon instructions from my Government, and in addition to our letter dated 3 January 2024, I wish to notify you that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the primary victims of terrorism, has, in the exercise of its inherent right of self-defence under international law and the Charter of the United Nations, launched anti-terrorist operations. These operations include targeted attacks against the bases and facilities of terrorist groups situated in Syria and Iraq.”
In the early hours of 16 January 2024, the simultaneous anti-terrorism procedures were carried out by the firing of several ballistic missiles, precisely targeting structures of Daesh and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, two designated terrorist communities, in Idlib and the region under the occupation of the terrorist group in the northeast of the Syrian Arab Republic. Additionally, an intelligence unit employed by anti-Iranian terrorist groups in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan Region, was targeted. The facility has operated as a base for intelligence and sabotage operations in Iran.
Iran’s anti-terrorism operations launched in response to the recent heartbreaking terrorist attacks in Kerman, Iran on 3 January 2024 resulted in the killing of over 100 innocent civilians, including children and women, with many others upholding injuries. The Daesh-affiliated groups asserted responsibility. Fortunately, the offensive attacks in Kerman received strong and unanimous denunciation by the members of the UN Security Council.
The operations were required and proportionate, precisely targeting bases of terrorist groups and completely respecting Iran’s international obligations, particularly international humanitarian law.
The Islamic Republic of Iran restates, once again, its unwavering dedication to fully respect the national sovereignty, independence, harmony, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic. As a reliable member of the United Nations, the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms its commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. Furthermore, Iran repeats its inherent rights, as recognized by international law, to protect its sovereignty, national security, and its citizens against any threats or aggression. This commitment mirrors Iran’s resolve to protect its interests and maintain peace and security within its borders.
