Tactics Institute is calling with immediate effect for concerted action to address the alarming rise of terrorism in Burkina Faso. The organization raises grave concerns over the escalating violence, which has resulted in Burkina Faso becoming the most severely impacted country in the world in terms of terrorism-related deaths, according to the 2024 Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
In 2023 alone, one-quarter of all deaths related to terrorism globally occurred in Burkina Faso, with nearly 2,000 people killed in 258 terror incidents—an increase of 68 per cent from the previous year. The authors of the GTI have warned of further increases in terrorism if the current uncertain political situation in Burkina Faso persists.
The main perpetrators of these attacks include Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), affiliated with al-Qaida, along with the Islamic State group (IS), which has been ramping up operations in the region. The situation in Burkina Faso reflects a broader trend of the global epicentre of terrorism shifting from the Middle East and North Africa to Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.
Furthermore, the Tactics Institute emphasizes that the escalating terrorism threat in Burkina Faso not only poses a direct danger to the country’s citizens but also has the potential to further undermine the stability and peace of the already volatile Sahel region. The cycle of violence perpetuated by terrorist groups not only leads to loss of life and displacement but also exacerbates existing socio-economic challenges, creating a fertile ground for further radicalization and extremism. Urgent action is needed to prevent the situation from deteriorating further and to safeguard the future of the region.
Terrorist violence in Burkina Faso is not only a threat to regional security but also a violation of international fundamental rights. Attacks against civilians, including women and children, in villages and places of worship are reprehensible and must be condemned unequivocally.
Tactics Institute demands immediate action from concerned parties to address the root causes of terrorism in Burkina Faso and the wider Sahel region. This includes Increased international cooperation and support to bolster security efforts in Burkina Faso and neighbouring countries facing similar challenges. Transparent and thorough investigations into incidents of terrorism, with perpetrators held accountable for their actions. Sustainable strategies to address the underlying factors fueling terrorism, such as poverty, instability, and competition for resources.
Moreover, the recent withdrawal of French forces from Mali, the termination of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, and political instability in neighbouring Niger have all contributed to the escalating violence in the Sahel. The international community must take urgent action to address these issues and prevent further destabilization of the region. Tactics Institute calls on all belligerents to cease their actions immediately and work towards lasting peace and stability in Burkina Faso and the Sahel region.
