Tactics Institute Demands Immediate Cessation of Airstrikes on Diplomatic Buildings in Damascus

Tactics Institute strongly denounces the recent Israeli airstrike that destroyed the Iranian consulate. The building was adjoining the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria. Footage and photos from the consulate area after the attack demonstrated extensive damage, fire, and smoke. Media reported that the building had been demolished. The institute condemned the attack as an unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of Syria and sabotaged its stability and security. The attack was a violation of international law and a serious breach of the Vienna agreements for diplomatic and consular relations.

The attack, which happened on April 1, resulted in the killing of 16 lives, including a senior Quds Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and seven other IRGC officers. This unnecessary raid took place amid intensified tensions between Israel and Iran. It is worse an already explosive situation in the region. The Supreme Leader of Iran pledged a harsh answer to the attack. Khamenei’s political advisor Ali Shamkhani, stated that the United States “remains directly liable whether or not it was conscious of the discretion to carry out this attack”. Iran also dispatched a letter to the UN Security Council saying it “reserves its legitimate and inherent right to respond decisively”

Under international law, diplomatic buildings, including consulates and embassies, are considered “civilian objects” and are protected from targeting unless used for military purposes. The 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Convention on Consular Relations uphold these protections. We highlight the violation, stating that such airstrikes within Syria’s territory without consent breach Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

Moreover, persistent aggression in the region, such as the recent Israeli airstrike, exacerbates stresses and escalates the conflict. It constructs an atmosphere of fear and tension. It increases the possibility of retaliatory actions and further violence. This cycle of charge not only endangers the lives of civilians but also threatens diplomatic efforts sought to resolve conflicts peacefully.

Tactics Institute calls upon all players involved to respect international laws and discontinue any actions that endanger regional security and peace. The collapse of diplomatic buildings damages fundamental rights. It poses a grave threat to stability in the region. Tactics Institute suggests the rapid cessation of airstrikes on diplomatic buildings and calls for a swift solution to prevent further escalation.
