The Somali army has launched an operation in the region of Hiiraan and reported the killing of 16 al-Shabaab terrorists. During the execution of operations with local forces, the army has managed to take strategic points such as Beera Yabaal and Buur Abooto under their control.
The military has amplified attacks by the Somali government against al-Shabaab for perpetual peace and security. Attacks against Somalia, or rather by it, are led by extremist organisations such as al-Shabaab, which have been happening since 2007 when al-Shabaab launched an insurgency against the Somali government and the African Union forces.
Al-Shabaab has carried out various attacks within Somalia and the surrounding countries; the military actions against it, however, do not reduce its significant presence. This group is violent in their actions and intends to form an Islamic state within Somalia.
The Somali army has been engaging in active operations against al-Shabaab for years, trying to break down the control of this group and ensure security in Somalia. In August 2023, the Somali government initiated a large-scale military operation planned to neutralise al-Shabaab in five months. Central Somalia, especially the Hirshabelle and Galmudug regions, were the focus; these included the local clans who were in an uprising against al-Shabaab. The initial phase was reported as the most effective since 2016, reclaiming territories previously held by the group for over a decade.
So far, the army has witnessed significant setbacks since the beginning of these operations; for example, a suicide bomb attack in July 2023 killed more than twenty soldiers stationed at a military academy. This was followed by al-Shabaab claiming it had killed 178 soldiers who were soldiers at a central Somalia military base.
To date, by October 2023, the government said that about 1,650 militants had been killed since the beginning of the offensive. However, al-Shabaab was still able to rear up and launch successful counterattacks, which proved that things remained unsettled.
